Tech Talks: how Mem is helping companies organise their workflow

Staying on top of things when working remotely can be hard.

It's no longer as simple as just checking the filing cabinet for that document your boss needs. As more and more of us are staying out-of-the-office it's important for information to be centralised and digitised.

Luckily with Mem, you don't have to think twice about organising your workflow - it just does it for you. Colleagues can collaborate asynchronously using Mem's simple keyboard shortcuts which allow for the seamless capture of data and information. There's also no need to wade through endless online folders with confusing names when trying to recall info - Mem's natural language search functions they way you do.

To learn more about the platform, we spoke to Co-Founder, Dennis Xu, all about how Mem has been working for people so far, whether hybrid working is here to stay, and how distributed teams can stay organised.

Can you summarise your platform in a sentence?

Mem is the world's first self-organizing workspace — leveraging artificial intelligence to automatically organize your team's notes, research, documents, and more.

What role do you see technology playing in the future of work? How will your platform fit into that?

We are seeing work as we know it change before our eyes — driven by a Cambrian explosion in AI-powered applications finally coming to market. Up until now, it has been unreasonable to expect computers to be able to help humans organize information, especially topics in complex fields such as scientific research, technology, etc.

This is because in order to organize, you need to first comprehend. Today's computers are far closer to human-level comprehension (some call this "consciousness") than public perception would make you believe.

Mem leverages recent breakthroughs in natural language processing to give every team a personal AI that empowers them to unlock their creative potential. It intelligently organizes your information, automatically connects related concepts, and ensures that important information is reaching the right people at the right time.

The impact that artificial intelligence will have in the day-to-day work of knowledge workers (more than 1 billion and growing in the world) will be profound, and we sit at the bleeding edge of that.

How have companies been using Mem so far?

It's been incredible to see the breadth of use cases. For example, we have biotech companies who are using Mem to power drug discovery, producers who are using Mem to write their next blockbuster hit, and investors using Mem to identify investment opportunities that they otherwise would have missed.

Hybrid working - is it here to stay?

Hybrid work is definitely here to stay. So many companies (any company founded after 2018) went through their formative years during the pandemic, and were forced to hire all over the world.

Those same companies aren't going to force all of those employees to move to headquarters, especially if they want to stay competitive in the hiring market. I think people are also starting to realize that there are real benefits to not forcing people to commute 5 days a week.

Any tech platforms you'd like to give a shoutout to while you're here? Maybe one that has helped your company during the transition to more digital working.

We've loved using gather.town

Centered around fully customizable spaces, Gather makes spending time with your communities just as easy as real life.

Mem is a digital self-organising workspace. Do you have any tips for employers on how to best organise their remote or distributed workforces?

In a hybrid world, one of the most important things any employer can do is to make sure you develop a writing culture. As more communication moves async, it's becoming increasingly important to document decisions and move conversations offline. People are going to be missing a lot of the context that would otherwise have been picked up in an office setting.

Of course, one of the biggest challenges that's arising as a result of documentation-heavy cultures is just how difficult it is to keep everything organized. At the end of the day, if you can't find something, it's as if you never wrote it down in the first place. I'm biased, but I'd recommend using Mem for that.

Mem isn't the only app taking the hybrid working world by storm. So are we. Want to learn more about NearU? Book a free demo with our Sales team or simply download our app from the App Store or Google Play and search, book, work.
